What are the differences in Values?

The jewelry industry generally derives values via the following methods:

Wholesale Value:  this means the average wholesale price that jewelry sellers generally pay.

Retail Value: this is very subjective and is usually based on what the average high retail prices are for jewelry.  This could vary depending on where you buy jewelry i.e., discount department store or a fine jeweler.

Appraised Value: again this is very subjective depending on who is appraising the jewelry.  Most appraisers arrive at an appraised value by evaluating the average high retail value of the jewelry sold at fine jewelry stores (not discounted stores).  Most jewelers will appraise your jewelry for an amount below your expectations if you did not originally purchase from them.

Replacement Value: again this is very subjective and is usually derived by a gemological laboratory that jewelry sellers use to offer their customers an accurate unbiased opinion and a high value so that a customer may obtain insurance coverage for loss or theft.

Simply said…the best way to determine jewelry values are to shop around and try to find the best deal and not use values as a guide to what you should pay.  The best way to find a deal is to shop around by comparing quality and prices.  Values should not be a factor in your decision to purchase jewelry since they usually have no relevance to actual market prices.

What is the difference between a USGL Estimated Value and Retail Value?

Neiman’s posts USGL values on many of our auctions so buyers have a ballpark replacement value.  Any evaluation & identification report provided by us is not a recommendation of a purchase or a guarantee that any stated valuation provided by USGL will result in a sale at that price. Any stated value is for the customer's sole use for the purpose of indicating an estimated value to obtain insurance coverage and shall not be considered in any manner whatsoever, as to the actual value of the item.

There is no warranty or representation of any kind, regarding any report provided by USGL. All reports are based on the best opinion by USGL and any information contained in a report is only approximate as the limitations of gemstone grading allow. Items are evaluated as per USGL's own internal guidelines for carat weight, clarity grade, color grade and proportions of mounted gemstones and any opinions are only estimated and may not be accurate or consistent with the overall industry standards/methods used by other gemological laboratories. USGL is not responsible for different opinions that may occur from repeated grading by others.

Are your stones “natural”?

All Neimans gemstones are genuine gemstones, produced by Mother Nature, and mined from the earth.

Do you offer ring sizing?

No. However, your item may be sized by your local jewelry repair shop. Please note that jewelry repair shops generally charge up to 70% less for resizing than a jewelry store.

How do I care for my jewelry?

Keeping your jewelry clean is the most important thing you can do to make it looks its best. The best way to clean your fine jewelry is to use an old, soft-bristled toothbrush with soap and water or with non-ammonia jewelry cleaner. Occasionally, you should take your jewelry to a local jeweler for a professional cleaning and to check the security of the gemstones.
