Merely in their first National League year, the blue-white team did not manage to qualify itself for international business. At the time of the winter break in the past season at ninth position in the league table, this hadn't even been in the cards. But thanks to a splendid return round with the exception of the matches in Bremen, against Bayern Mnchen and in Wolfsburg, HERTHA BSC manages to climb to fifth position with its new trainer Huub Stevens. The preparations for the 2002/03 season take place quite similar as in the past year: after victories against FC Bayern Mnchen and the German champion Borussia Dortmund, HERTHA BSC reaches the league cup final and defeats FC Schalke 04 with 4:1 in Ruhrstadion in Bochum. Trainer Huub Stevens' team thus manages to defend the title. On the day of the league cup match against the Bavarians in Aue on July 25, 2002, HERTHA BSC celebrates its 110th birthday. Just in time for the festivities, manager Dieter Hoene presents the Brazilian world football champion Luizao as the newcomer to the numerous guests. Afterwards, the team flies to the match in the Erz Mountains by helicopter.
