We chose the Generation Beta drumsets because they are great quality. The bearing edges (the edges of the shell that the drumhead lays on) are machine cut, not cut by hand like most other sets, the outer PVC covering on each drum is thick and has been placed on the shell straight, and the pedals are solid and will last for years. Other drum sets we have had in our store had unevenly cut bearing edges. The worst was the shells for one company were 1/4" too big, so a standard drum head wouldn't fit on it.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A DRUM SET:
1) Number of Lugs - What you will want to look at first is the number of lugs each drum has. The key to a good drum is an even number of lugs. You don't want too few OR TOO MANY on your drums. If any drum has 5 lugs on each side, then it might not tune properly and you would want to look for a different set.
2) 9-Ply shells - Just about every drum shell in the world is made up of between 4 and 12 plys of thin wood that is bonded together to make a thicker shell. With Mahogany, if you have too few plys then the drum will fall apart or warp over time. Too many plys will actually make the shell dampen itself. The median number seems too be 9 plys.
3) Double-braced Hardware - This is most widely misleading part of a drum set. 'Double-braced' DOES mean that there is double the bracing, but it DOESN'T mean that the bracing was rugged/thick enough to begin with. If the hardware looks unsturdy, then it probably is unsturdy. You can take two coat hanger wires and tape them together and call it double braced, but it doesn't mean it will hold up even under normal use.
